最近一个名为Marriage Market Takeover的广告片刷爆了微信朋友圈，上YouTube瞅了一眼，短短五天之内，点击超过一百万次。从评论中，我们看到不止是在中国，其他一些国家的年轻人也面临相似的问题。
广告片讲述了这样一个故事：几个大约三十多岁的单身女性被打上了“剩女”这个标签。她们最大的压力来自于父母。在上海人民广场的相亲角，父母们根据身高、体重、长相、职业、收入这些标准在为自己的子女寻找配偶。片尾，这些女性一起，在相亲角挂出了自己的宣言，打动了父母，得到了他们的理解和支持。
在中国，也许旁人的眼光我们可以不在意，父母的想法却不能忽视。中国人说：成家立业。先成家，才能安心拼事业。只有你结婚了，父母才觉得他们的使命完成了，或者至少暂告一个段落了。很多人迫于压力，选择听从父母的意愿去相亲、结婚，这在父母和大众看来是孝顺的表现。孝顺，顾名思义，除了“孝”，还有“顺”，就是顺了父母的心意。
很长一段时间里，中国电视剧里的单身女青年，无论事业多么成功，都面临着相似的遭遇：父母逼婚或因为大龄未婚而被贬得一文不值。还有人说：干得好不如嫁得好。父母会为自己的女儿“嫁得好”而骄傲，却很少为单身女儿的事业做得好而骄傲。好现象是，现在渐渐有人开始像广告中的女性一样站出来说“不”：单身是我自己的选择，我一个人过也很幸福。我认为这是一种进步。
不过，现实中，父母观念的转变并没有广告片中展现得那么容易。需要花很多时间去不断地沟通。令人沮丧的是，有时候沟通依然会失败。路还很长。不过，生活是自己的，我衷心希望有越来越多的女性能够按照自己的意愿生活，无论是选择单身还是结婚。也希望上一辈能对自己子女的选择多一些尊重和理解。希望不久的将来，“剩女”这个词能够彻底从中文世界消失。

English: Single is a choice
Recently an advertisement called Marriage Market Takeover got the attention of a group people on the mobile messaging app WeChat. After it was put on YouTube it very quickly reached over a million views. From what we saw in the comments it was apparent that this isn’t just an issue in China. Other young people from other countries are also faced with similar problems.
The video tells a story of several single women over the age of thirty that are marked with the expression “Leftover Women.” Their biggest pressure comes from their parents. At the “marriage market” in Shanghai’s people’s square, parents look for spouses on behalf of their children according to standards such as weight, looks, profession, and income. In the video, these women together posted their own declaration at “marriage market” which moved their parents and achieved their understanding and support.
In China, we probably don’t really care about what other people think about us, however we can’t ignore what our parents think. Chinese peoples say: “成家立业”(Chéngjiālìyè), which means first you must start a family only than you can be at ease in starting a career. Only when you are married will your parents consider their mission completed, or at least part of it temporarily completed. Many people are pressured to listen to their parents wishes and go on blind dates and get married. According to parents and the overall public this is the manifestation of 孝顺 ( Xiàoshùn-filial piety) . 孝顺, according to the meaning of each characters, has the meaning of filial (孝) it also has the meaning of obey (顺), therefore meaning to obey the wishes of one’s parents.
Within a long period of time, in Chinese TV dramas young single women, no matter how successful they are at their careers, are all faced with same predicament: their parents can either arrange their marriage or because of old age they will be reduced to worthlessness. Furthermore people say: doing well is not as good as being married well. Parents will only be proud of their daughter if she is “married well”, however very few are proud of how well their daughter is doing in her career. The good thing is that there are now people just like the women in the video who are gradually starting to stand up and say “no”: being single is my personal choice, I can also be happy living alone. I think this is a kind of progress.
However, in reality, changing one’s parent’s conceptions are not as easy as it is shown in the video. You must spend a lot of time constantly communicating. Something that causes people to get depressed is sometimes communication still will fail. The path is very long. However, life is yours, I hope with all my heart that more and more women are able to live according to how they wish to live, no matter if that choice is to be single or married. I also hope throughout our lives we can respect more and understand more the choices of our own sons and daughters. I hope in the near future, the expression “leftover woman” will be able to completely disappear from the Chinese language.
