The word ‘嘻哈 – xīhā’ comes from the English word ‘hip-hop’, which is a form of music and culture originating in the USA. ‘嘻哈音乐 – xīhā yīnyuè’ (hip-hop music) is also known as ‘说唱音乐 – shuōchàng yīnyuè’ (rap music). Chinese ‘嘻哈音乐 – xīhā yīnyuè’ is precisely what we will be introducing today.
Recently in China there was an extremely popular talent show called ‘中国有嘻哈 – zhōngguó yǒu xīhā’ (English title: ‘The Rap of China’). It was a rap-music competition. This TV show enabled the common people of China to become familiar with many ‘underground’ rappers, and for hip-hop music to move from the underground towards the general population.
‘嘻哈音乐 – xīhāyīnyuè’ originated on the street-blocks of black Americans, in response to the realities of society, and to criticize problems within that society. It was in the 1980’s that pop-musicians from Hong Kong and Taiwan first started including elements of American hip-hop into their own work. Soon afterwards, there were more and more pop artists and rock-and-roll musicians from mainland China adding elements of hip-hop into their own work.
Since the 90s, ‘嘻哈音乐 – xīhāyīnyuè’ has gradually grown in popularity, and countless underground rappers have emerged. Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi’an, Guangzhou, Beijing, Tianjin, and Wuhan are a few places that have slowly developed their own unique style of ‘嘻哈音乐 – xīhāyīnyuè’. Much of the contents (lyrics) of 嘻哈音乐 are focused on inequalities within society, and on publicising the actual state of society.
As a result of being made into commercial media however, the rap from the talent show ‘China has Rap’ now protests against, and reveals injustices far less than was expected.
Below, we can appreciate a piece of rap music called ‘Made in China’, written by ‘海尔兄弟 – hǎiěr xīonddi’ (Higher Brothers) from the city of Chengdu, in collaboration with American vocalist, Famous Dex. The Mandarin in this track has a slight Sichuan accent, which I think sounds really good. What do you think?
