English: Beihang University Professor Sexually Assaults Female Students
Recently, Luo Xixi, a PhD graduate of Beijing Aeronautics and Aerospace University (Běijīng hángkōng hángtiān dàxué, called ‘Běiháng’ for short) ‘real-name reported’ [1] her PhD supervisor, Chen Xiaowu, for sexually harassing female students, receiving widespread interest on the internet. On January 1st, Luo Xixi release an article on Sina Weibo titled ‘I want to report Běiháng professor, and ‘Yangtze River scholar’ Chen Xiaowu for sexually harassing female students’, revealing that her PhD supervisor Chen Xiaowu had sexually harassed her and other female students.
Last October, after Luo Xixi wrote on Zhihu.com [2] about the damage she personally suffered as a result of her experiences 12 years earlier, other girls who in succession had suffered the same harassment by Chen Xiaowu made contact with Luo Xixi. Once she had gathered sufficient evidence, Luo Xixi lodged her report about Mr. Chen Xiaowu to the school. On November 1st, Běiháng’s official Weibo (account) announced the results of the process: There existed sexually harassing behaviour towards students by Chen Xiaowu, his postgraduate-supervisor qualifications and teaching qualifications have been revoked [3]. A few days later, the Chinese Ministry of Education also revoked the title of ‘Yangtze River Scholar’ from Chen Xiaowu.
In 2017, the ‘#MeToo’ movement, launched on social media by American female-star Alyssa Milano and others swept across the whole world in more than 80 countries. The “#MeToo” movement calls upon victims of sexual harassment to bravely speak out about their story, and to add the tag ‘#MeToo’. When Luo XiXi posted on WeiBo reporting Chen XiaoWu, she used a “#MeToo” background image. The “#MeToo” movement encouragement caused Luo XiXi to become China’s first brave ‘Silence Breaker’ (‘打破沉默者 – dǎpò chénmò zhě’).
Over the last 2 years, a lot of university and college sexual-harassment cases have been exposed. Although many similar incidents have attracted a lot of concern in the past, none have received explicit handling by the relevant agencies. This time, Běiháng handled Chen Xiaowu’s case quickly and and unequivocally, and as a result received widespread praise. Luo XiXi’s ‘real-name reporting’ is a very good start. Since Luo Xixi’s ‘real-name reporting’, several thousand students from more than 60 schools and universities nationwide have publically appealed for their ‘alma mater’ to establish a mechanism to counter sexual-harassment. However, the number of schools that are capable of publicly handling this kind of sexual harassment case in the same way as Běiháng is still extremely small. In the fight against sexual harassment, and the push for gender equality, we still have a very long way to go.
